On April 25, I had the honor of sharing my thoughts on alliances in this uncertain era as a young scholar at the public symposium on Japan’s Diplomacy between the East and West hosted by the Leiden University Institute of Security and Global Affairs, The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, and the LeidenAsiaCentre.

Mina Pollmann giving remarks
At the Leiden University Institute of Security and Global Affairs, The Hague.

I focused on three key messages. To Japan, I reiterated the importance of building up Japan’s own defense capabilities. To European democracies, I emphasized the importance of working together more effectively in the security realm. To international relations scholars, I advocated for a renewed focus on studying the domestic political foundations of alliance policymaking.
